August is as hot as July, and in the first half of the month heatwaves are common. The heat peaks in the late afternoon and early evening; nights are warm, and the only cool hours are just before dawn. Towards the end of the month, evenings become a little more bearable.
Do what Sevillians do: go out early, stay inside from about 14:00 to 19:00, and live at night.

Virgen de los Reyes (15 August)
The Assumption, 15 August, is a national holiday. In Seville it is the feast of the Virgen de los Reyes, patron saint of the city, whose image leaves the cathedral in an early-morning procession around the streets beside it. Many people come at dawn, some after a night out. It is one of the most local events of the year, and one of the few that happens in August.

Horse races on the beach at Sanlúcar
In August, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir, holds horse races on the beach at low tide, a tradition since the 19th century. It is about 1.5 hours from Seville by car. Combine it with the town’s manzanilla sherry and fried fish.
Cool places in the city

Crowds and hotel prices
August is the quietest month for locals. Many family-run bars, restaurants and shops close for two to four weeks, often with a sign on the door, and some shops keep shorter summer hours. The monuments still draw tour groups in the morning. Book the Alcázar and the cathedral a day or two ahead for the first slots, when it is cooler.
