Hotel Alfonso XIII (Santa Cruz edge, €€€€). A neo-Mudéjar palace built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, with tiled patios, a large garden pool and a bar that has hosted royalty and film stars. Next to the Alcázar gardens and the university. Best for: a special occasion and a pool you can swim in. Drawback: a large hotel, less personal than a small palace.
Gran Meliá Colón (Centro, €€€). A classic grand hotel near the Museo de Bellas Artes, with a spa and a rooftop pool and terrace. Best for: full service and a spa. Drawback: the neighbourhood is less picturesque than Santa Cruz.
Radisson Collection Hotel Magdalena Plaza Sevilla (Centro, €€€). A newer hotel on Plaza de la Magdalena with contemporary rooms and a rooftop pool. Best for: modern comfort in the centre. Drawback: less historic character than the palaces.

EME Catedral Mercer (Santa Cruz, €€€). Contemporary rooms in a group of old houses facing the cathedral, with the most famous rooftop bar and pool in town. Best for: the view. Drawback: the rooftop bar is busy with non-guests in the evening.
Hotel Fontecruz Sevilla Seises (Santa Cruz, €€–€€€). A historic building a few steps from the cathedral, with a rooftop pool beside the Giralda. Best for: a Giralda view at a lower price. Drawback: rooms are more modern than the building suggests.
Outside the centre
Eurostars Torre Sevilla (La Cartuja, €€€). A hotel on the upper floors of the Torre Sevilla skyscraper, with views over the whole city. Best for: the view and concerts at the Cartuja. Drawback: a taxi or a 30-minute walk to the old town.

- Ask for the view. In Santa Cruz hotels, a room facing the Giralda or the cathedral costs more but is the reason to book. Check the room type, not just the hotel.
- Compare direct rates. Luxury hotels sometimes add breakfast, an upgrade or late check-out when you book direct. Compare before you pay, and choose free cancellation.
