The short answer: take the train

The train from Málaga to Córdoba takes about 1 hour, from Málaga María Zambrano to Córdoba Central. It is the fastest, most comfortable and, if you book ahead, often the cheapest option, so for most travellers it is the one we’d choose.

  • Train: about 1 hour, roughly 20–25 a day in total across Renfe (AVE and Avant), Iryo and Ouigo. Fares start at about €10–15 if you book ahead and rise to €35–45 or more on the day.
  • Bus: Alsa, about 2 h 30–3 h 20, only a handful a day, usually cheaper than a flexible train fare but slower. We think it is rarely worth it.
  • Car: about 1 h 45–2 h on the toll-free A-45 via Antequera. We’d only drive if Córdoba is part of a longer drive.
  • Day trip: easy. An early train gets you to the Mezquita for opening time, and trains run back into the evening.

There are no flights between the two cities. Córdoba’s airport has no regular scheduled flights.

By train

  1. Go to Málaga María Zambrano station. From the old town it is about 15–20 minutes’ walk, or a short taxi ride.
  2. Choose a train. Renfe runs AVE and Avant services. Iryo and Ouigo, two rival high-speed operators, also serve the route and are often cheaper. Journeys are direct and take about 1 hour.
  3. Bags are scanned before you board, so arrive about 20–30 minutes before departure.
  4. You arrive at Córdoba Central station, on the north side of the city centre.

Prices. Fares depend on the operator, the hour and how far ahead you buy. We’d book a week or more ahead for the cheapest fares, often around €10–15 one way. Same-day tickets and peak times (Friday and Sunday evenings, holidays, the May patios festival) cost much more. Compare operators in one place on Omio, or check Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo directly.

Cheapest fares: look at Ouigo and Iryo’s lowest tariffs and Renfe’s cheaper Avant fares. These usually come with strict change rules and, on the low-cost tariffs, extras such as seat selection and larger bags are charged separately. Read the fare conditions before you buy.

Check disruptions. Adif carried out works on the high-speed line between Córdoba and Madrid from June 2026, and Renfe adjusted timetables on Andalusia–Madrid services. Málaga–Córdoba trains are a separate stretch, but check the Renfe and Adif notices before you travel.

From Málaga airport

There is no direct train or bus. Take the Cercanías C1 from the airport to María Zambrano (about 10–15 minutes, a few euros), then change to the high-speed train. Allow at least an hour between landing and your train. See Málaga airport transfers.

By bus

Alsa runs buses from Málaga bus station, next to María Zambrano, to Córdoba. There are only a few a day, and the journey takes from about 2 h 30 to over 3 hours depending on stops. Fares are usually lower than a flexible train ticket, but a booked-ahead train can match them and takes a third of the time. We think the bus makes sense only if the trains are sold out. Book on Omio or Alsa.

By car

The route is about 165 km on the A-45 north from Málaga through Antequera, then on towards Córdoba. It is toll-free and takes about 1 h 45 to 2 hours. Antequera is, in our view, a good stop on the way.

  • Hire car: car hire at Málaga airport is the easiest pick-up. Compare prices on DiscoverCars.
  • Parking in Córdoba: the Judería around the Mezquita is closed to most traffic. Use a public car park at the edge of the old town, or your hotel’s car park if it has one. Expect about €15–25 for 24 hours.

If Córdoba is a single day trip, we’d take the train, which is simpler and avoids the parking. If you are continuing to Seville, Granada or Madrid by car, see our Andalusia road trip.

Day trip or one-way stop?

Day trip. An early train around 8:00 reaches Córdoba by about 9:15, in time for the free morning hour at the Mezquita (check the current rules on the Mezquita page). Trains back run into the evening, so you can see the main sights and still eat dinner in Córdoba. Book both directions in advance.

One-way, on the way to Seville or Madrid. Córdoba sits on the high-speed line between Málaga, Seville and Madrid, so it breaks the journey well. Leave your bags at the station, see the old town and carry on in the afternoon. Buy the two legs as separate tickets so a delay on one doesn’t cancel the other. For the other direction, see Seville to Málaga and Seville to Córdoba.

Stay a night. We think Córdoba is calmer after the day trippers leave. See where to stay in Córdoba, or search hotels in Córdoba’s old town.

Luggage storage at Córdoba station

Córdoba station is reported to have a left-luggage service (consigna). Check where it is, the hours and the price when you arrive, and have a back-up. Private luggage-storage points and some hotels near the Mezquita also take bags, even for non-guests in some cases. If you plan to keep moving, carry only a small bag.

From the station to the Mezquita

The old town is south of the station. The walk to the Mezquita takes about 20–25 minutes through the centre and is mostly flat. A city bus or taxi saves time if you have bags or it is hot. In summer, midday heat is strong, so go early.

What to see in one day

We’d start with the Mezquita-Catedral, the main reason to come. Tickets cost about €15, with a free entry hour on weekday mornings under conditions. See our Mezquita guide. Then walk through the Judería and its flowered patios, cross the Roman Bridge and finish at the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and its gardens. For a longer list, see things to do in Córdoba and the Córdoba guide. If you have a second day, add Medina Azahara.

Tours

A guided day trip from Málaga to Córdoba takes care of transport and a guide and is easiest if you don’t want to plan. The trade-off is less free time than going by train. A guided Mezquita tour booked in Córdoba adds context to the visit. For more ideas, see day trips from Málaga.

Córdoba to Málaga

The return works the same way: Córdoba Central to Málaga María Zambrano by train in about 1 hour, then the Cercanías C1 to the airport if needed. We’d leave a generous margin if you have a flight, and wouldn’t book the last train of the day for a morning flight home.
