The short answer: fastest, cheapest, easiest
Málaga to Ronda takes about 1 h 45 to 2 h 30 by direct bus, from Málaga bus station to Ronda bus station in the new town. For most travellers without a car, we think the bus is the best option.
- Fastest: a car, about 1 h 20–1 h 30 on the inland route through Ardales (A-357 and A-367), toll-free
- Cheapest and simplest without a car: the bus, mainly run by Damas, several a day, from about €12–20
- Train: in 2026 no trains run to Ronda. The line is closed for works, probably until autumn 2027, and Renfe runs replacement buses from Antequera. We’d take the direct bus instead.
- From the Costa del Sol: Marbella is about 50 minutes to 1 hour from Ronda by car on the A-397, and Avanza runs buses from Marbella bus station.
- Easiest day trip: a guided day tour from Málaga, often with Setenil de las Bodegas on the way.

There are no flights to Ronda, which has no airport. A taxi from Málaga costs roughly €130–170 and only makes sense if shared.
Step by step
By bus from Málaga
- Go to Málaga bus station (Estación de Autobuses, Paseo de los Tilos), next to María Zambrano train station and about 15–20 minutes’ walk from the old town.
- Take a direct bus to Ronda. Damas runs most of them, with more departures in the morning than in the afternoon, and takes about 1 h 45–2 hours. Avanza (formerly Portillo) and smaller local companies run a few slower buses that stop in villages on the way, so check the journey time when you book.
- Buy your ticket online or at the station. We’d book a day or two ahead for weekends, public holidays and summer, and book your return too if you are coming back the same day.
- In Ronda, buses stop at the bus station in the new town, about 15 minutes’ walk from the Puente Nuevo. Walk down through the pedestrian streets towards the Plaza de España and the bridge.

From Málaga airport
As far as we know, there is no direct public bus from Málaga airport to Ronda. The easiest way is the Cercanías C1 train from the airport to Málaga María Zambrano (about 10–15 minutes), then the short walk to the bus station next door and a bus to Ronda. Allow about 3 hours in total, and leave a margin for flight delays when you book the bus.
With luggage or a group, we think hiring a car at the airport is often easier: you are on the road to Ronda straight away. See Málaga airport transfers and car hire at Málaga airport.
By train (suspended in 2026)
Ronda is on the railway from Algeciras to Bobadilla and Antequera. In 2026 the line is closed: storms damaged it early in the year, and in September 2026 Adif started a long upgrade of the line that is expected to keep it closed until autumn 2027. Renfe runs replacement buses between Antequera-Santa Ana and Ronda, but they are few, so the direct bus from Málaga is simpler.
When the line reopens, the usual journey from Málaga is:
- A fast train from Málaga María Zambrano to Antequera-Santa Ana, a station in the countryside outside Antequera (about 30 minutes).
- A change there, or at Bobadilla, to the regional train towards Algeciras, which climbs through the hills to Ronda (about 1 h 15 more).
- With the wait, the journey takes about 2–3 hours, and there are only a few connections a day.
- Ronda station is at the northern edge of the new town, about 15–20 minutes’ walk from the Puente Nuevo.
Check the current situation on the Renfe website before planning around the train.
By car
The quickest route is about 100 km, 1 h 20 to 1 h 30, all toll-free: the A-357 west from Málaga up the Guadalhorce valley, then the A-367 past Ardales and Cuevas del Becerro to Ronda. It is a good road with mountain views, and it passes the turn for the Caminito del Rey near Ardales, so you can combine the walk and Ronda in one long day.
The alternative follows the coast: the A-7 or the AP-7 toll road west to San Pedro de Alcántara, then the A-397 up into the Serranía de Ronda. It takes about 1 h 45 from Málaga. The A-397 is a winding mountain road, slow behind lorries and at night, but with fine views. It is the natural route from Marbella, Puerto Banús or Estepona.

- Hire car: pick-up at Málaga airport is usually the cheapest. See car hire at Málaga airport and compare prices on DiscoverCars.
- In Ronda: we wouldn’t drive into the old town (La Ciudad), where the streets are narrow and partly restricted to residents. Use one of the underground car parks in the new town, such as the one under the Plaza del Socorro, a few minutes’ walk from the bridge.
By day tour
We think a guided day trip is the easiest way to see Ronda from Málaga without driving. Most tours leave Málaga in the morning, pick up along the Costa del Sol, and give you a guided walk and free time in Ronda. Many also stop in Setenil de las Bodegas, the village built under the rocks, about 20–25 minutes from Ronda. Expect about €50–90. Compare Ronda day trips from Málaga, or white villages tours from Málaga for a route with more villages.

From Marbella and the Costa del Sol
Marbella to Ronda is one of the most common trips on the coast. By car it is about 50 km and 50 minutes to 1 hour on the A-397 from San Pedro de Alcántara. Avanza runs buses from Marbella bus station to Ronda, about 1 h to 1 h 30, several a day. Many day tours also start in Marbella: Ronda day trips from Marbella. See our Marbella guide.
From Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola, driving via the A-7 and the A-397 or back via Málaga and Ardales takes about the same time. Without a car, we think a tour with hotel pick-up is often easier than getting to Málaga bus station first.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip works: with an early bus or a car, you get 5–6 hours in Ronda, enough for the Puente Nuevo, the viewpoints, the bullring and the old town. The last direct buses back leave in the evening, so check the time before you go.
One night is better, in our view. The tour groups leave in the late afternoon, and the bridge and the gorge are at their best at sunset and early in the morning. With a night, you can add Setenil or another of the white villages the next morning. Hotels in Ronda old town, or the Parador de Ronda right next to the bridge.

Which option to choose
- Day trip without a car: the first Damas bus in the morning and a booked return, or a guided tour if you want Setenil as well.
- Staying a night or more: the direct bus, which leaves you a short walk from your hotel.
- Arriving at Málaga airport and going straight to Ronda: a hire car, or the C1 train to Málaga and then the bus.
- Staying on the Costa del Sol: a car on the A-397, the Avanza bus from Marbella, or a tour with pick-up.
- Touring Andalusia: a car. Ronda sits well between Málaga, Seville and the white villages. See our Andalusia road trip.
- Train fans: wait for the reopening in 2027. The train is not an option in the meantime.
Both directions
Ronda to Málaga works the same way in reverse:
- Bus: Damas and other operators from Ronda bus station to Málaga bus station, about 1 h 45–2 h 30. From there, the C1 train goes to the airport.
- To Málaga airport for a flight: allow at least 3 hours by bus and train, or about 1 h 30 by car via Ardales. We wouldn’t take the last bus of the day for an evening flight.
- Car: A-367 and A-357 via Ardales, about 1 h 20–1 h 30, or the A-397 down to the coast.
Going on to Seville instead? See Seville to Ronda, which works in reverse. For Málaga itself, see our Málaga guide, and for the other big trip from the city, Málaga to Granada.
