The short answer: which way to go

Valencia to Seville is about 650 km by road and 540 km by rail. Valencia–Sevilla is a long trip, so pick the mode before you pick the date.

  • Fastest door to door: a direct flight, about 1 h 15 in the air, from Valencia airport (VLC) to Seville airport (SVQ). Vueling and Ryanair have been listed on the route, but not every day.
  • Best on the ground: a direct Renfe high-speed train, about 4 h 20, from Valencia Joaquín Sorolla to Sevilla Santa Justa. There are only one or two a day, so check first.
  • Fallback by train: change in Madrid, about 5.5 to 6 hours in total.
  • Bus: about 10 to 11 hours, sometimes with a change. We’d take it only on a tight budget.
  • Car: about 6.5 to 7 hours without stops. We think it is worth it only if you want to see places on the way.

Our recommendation: take the direct train if a convenient one runs on your day, fly if it does not, and avoid the bus. Drive only as part of a road trip, with a night on the way.

Step by step

By train

Direct train. Renfe runs a high-speed AVE between Valencia Joaquín Sorolla and Sevilla Santa Justa in about 4 h 20. The line goes inland through Cuenca and joins the Madrid–Andalusia line, with stops such as Puertollano and Córdoba. Services have been added and withdrawn over the years and there are only one or two a day, so check the date you want on Omio or on the Renfe website before you plan around it.

With a change in Madrid. If there is no direct train, go Valencia to Madrid, then Madrid to Seville. Both legs have several operators (Renfe AVE and Avlo, Iryo, Ouigo). Valencia–Madrid takes under 2 hours and Madrid–Seville about 2 h 30, so the total is about 5.5 to 6 hours.

  1. Check the Madrid stations. Trains from Valencia can arrive at Madrid Atocha or Chamartín, and the Seville trains all leave from Atocha. Changing station adds a transfer, so look for the same-station option.
  2. We’d leave at least an hour for the change, or book both legs on one ticket.
  3. We recommend booking early. The cheapest fares go first, especially on Fridays and Sundays.

Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early: bags are scanned before boarding. At Seville, Santa Justa is a 25 to 30 minute walk from the cathedral, or a taxi for about €8–12. See also Madrid to Seville.

By plane

Direct flights link Valencia (VLC) and Seville (SVQ) in about 1 h 15. Vueling and Ryanair have been listed on the route, but schedules change by season and some flights run only a few days a week. Check the days before you choose your dates.

Door to door, count on 3.5 to 4 hours once you add the airports, which is still about half an hour to an hour faster than the direct train. Check your baggage allowance: low-cost fares often include only a small cabin bag. From Seville airport, take the EA bus or a taxi: see Seville airport to the city centre.

By bus

The bus (Alsa and others) takes about 10 to 11 hours, and some departures need a change on the way. There are a few a day, including overnight services. It is the cheapest option on paper, but the saving over an early-booked train is in our view rarely worth the extra six hours. Compare times on Omio.

By car

The drive is about 650 km and takes about 6.5 to 7 hours without stops. The usual route follows the A-7 and A-31 inland to Albacete, then heads south by the A-32 towards Jaén province and joins the A-4 down the Guadalquivir valley through Córdoba to Seville. Most of this is motorway without tolls, but check your route.

  • Overnight stop: it is a long day. Albacete is roughly halfway, but we think the better stops are further south: Úbeda and Baeza (see Úbeda and Baeza) or Córdoba (see Córdoba). Both are a short detour and make the trip part of the holiday.
  • Hire car: hiring in Valencia and returning in Seville means a one-way fee. Compare on DiscoverCars.
  • In Seville: don’t drive into the historic centre, which has camera-controlled access and very little parking. See car hire in Seville and our Andalusia road trip.

Both directions

Seville to Valencia works the same way in reverse:

  • Train: from Santa Justa to Valencia Joaquín Sorolla, about 4 h 20 on a direct train, or via Madrid in about 5.5 to 6 hours. Reach Santa Justa by taxi or buses C1, C2, 21 and 32. See getting around Seville.
  • Flight: from Seville airport to Valencia, about 1 h 15. The EA airport bus leaves from the centre.
  • Bus: from Plaza de Armas, about 11 to 12 hours, often with a change.
  • Car: the same route north, about 6.5 to 7 hours.
