The short answer: fastest, cheapest, easiest

Cádiz to Seville is about 1 hour 45 minutes by direct train, from Cádiz station to Sevilla Santa Justa. The trip takes the same time in the other direction. For most travellers we think the train is the best choice.

  • Easiest: the train (Renfe, Media Distancia), usually about 1 h 45, from about €17 one way
  • Backup when trains are full: the bus (Comes), about 1 h 45 to 2 h
  • Most flexible: a car on the AP-4, about 1 h 30, with no tolls
  • No flights: there are no flights between the two cities

Timetables change by season, so check the day you travel. Compare trains and buses on Omio or book directly on the Renfe website.

Step by step

By train

  1. From Cádiz, go to the Cádiz train station, at the edge of the old town by the port. It is about 10 minutes’ walk from the cathedral.
  2. Take a direct Renfe Media Distancia train to Sevilla Santa Justa. Most direct trains stop at Jerez on the way. The journey is about 1 h 45; services with a change take longer.
  3. In Seville, Santa Justa is about 25–30 minutes’ walk from the cathedral, or a short taxi ride. See getting around Seville.

Aggregators showed fares from about €17 in summer 2026, much cheaper than on the high-speed lines. Book ahead for summer weekends, Carnival in February and Easter. The line also carries local Cercanías trains between Cádiz and Jerez, which stop more often and are not the fastest way to Seville. Check the stops and the final destination before you board.

Luggage goes on the racks and at the end of the carriages, so keep your bags in sight. Arrive a few minutes early rather than at the last moment.

By bus

Comes is the main operator. In Seville its buses leave from Prado de San Sebastián, south-east of the centre by Plaza de España, not from Plaza de Armas. Comes lists that station on its booking page, but confirm it on your ticket, as other operators may use Plaza de Armas. The trip takes about 1 h 45 to 2 h, with fewer departures than the train. In Cádiz the bus station is close to the train station.

We see the bus as a good backup when trains are full. Check the timetable first, especially for the last bus back, which can be earlier than the last train. Compare on Omio.

By car

The drive is about 125 km, around 1 h 30 without traffic. Take the AP-4, which has been free of tolls since 1 January 2020. The older A-4 / N-IV runs close to it and is slower, with more junctions, but it is useful if you want to stop in Jerez.

  • Hire car: a one-way hire from Seville to Cádiz usually adds a drop-off fee. Compare on DiscoverCars. See car hire in Seville.
  • In the cities: do not drive into the old town of either city. Seville has camera-controlled access, and Cádiz has narrow streets. We’d use an underground car park at the edge of the old town.

We think a car is worth it if you continue along the coast or to the white villages. See our Andalusia road trip.

Which option should I choose?

  • Train if you are going from city centre to city centre. In our view it is the best choice: quick, cheap and it drops you by both old towns.
  • Bus if the trains are sold out, or the bus times suit you better.
  • Car if you are going on to Jerez, the coast or the villages, or you are travelling as a group with bags.
  • Plane: not an option between the two, but see the airport notes below.

Both directions

Seville to Cádiz is the same trip in reverse: Renfe trains from Santa Justa (about 1 h 45), Comes buses from Prado de San Sebastián, or the AP-4. If your Cádiz to Seville journey ends at Seville airport, take the train to Santa Justa and continue by taxi or airport bus; see Seville airport transfers.

Jerez airport is on the same line, with its own station, and is the closest airport to Cádiz (about 40 minutes away). Check which trains stop there before you rely on it. If you land in Jerez and need Seville, the train is the simplest option. See Jerez. Car hire at the airport: DiscoverCars Jerez.

Stopovers on the way

  • Jerez de la Frontera: about an hour from Seville and 40 minutes from Cádiz. Sherry bodegas, the horse school and flamenco. See Jerez.
  • El Puerto de Santa María: a seafood town on the bay, on the train line, with a catamaran to Cádiz. We think it makes a good evening stop. Check that your train stops there.

Is a day trip realistic?

Yes, from Seville, and the train makes it easy: you can be in Cádiz by mid-morning and back for dinner. It is a tight day if you also want Jerez. Going the other way, Seville needs more than a single day from Cádiz. For a plan, see Seville to Cádiz day trip. For the city itself, see Cádiz.
