The short answer: fastest, cheapest, easiest

Huelva and Seville are about 90 km apart, and you can go by bus, train or car. The journey is short, so the choice mostly depends on where you start and finish.

  • Cheapest and most frequent: the bus (Damas), roughly 1 h 15 to 2 h depending on the service, from about €10–12
  • Most comfortable: the Renfe regional train to Sevilla Santa Justa, about 1 h 30, but only a few trains a day
  • Fastest and most flexible: a car on the toll-free A-49, about 1 hour
  • Heading for the beaches or Doñana: we’d take a car (see below)

Timetables change by season and day of the week, so check the operator’s site before you plan around a particular departure.

Comparison table (train, bus, car)

Flight None There are no flights between the two cities

Step by step

By bus

Damas is the operator on this route. Buses run between the Huelva bus station and Seville, which for most services should be the Plaza de Armas station, 15 minutes’ walk from the cathedral and close to Triana. Some services call at intermediate towns on the way, which is why journey times vary. Compare departures on Omio or on the Damas website.

We think the bus is the best option if you have no strong preference: it has more departures than the train, costs about €10–12 and leaves from stations close to the centre of each city. Weekends and holidays can have fewer services.

By train

There is a rail link: Renfe regional trains (Media Distancia) run between Huelva station and Sevilla Santa Justa, in about 1 h 30. But the service is limited, with only a handful of trains a day in each direction, so a missed train can mean a long wait. There is no high-speed train to Huelva. Check the times on the Renfe website or on Omio.

In Seville, Santa Justa is 25–30 minutes’ walk from the cathedral, or a short taxi ride. The Huelva station is in the town centre. If you arrive by plane in Seville, see how to get to Seville.

By car

Take the A-49, the motorway between Seville and the Portuguese border. The drive to Huelva is about 1 hour, and the road is free of tolls. Leaving Seville in the morning or returning on a summer Sunday evening, expect queues near the city.

  • Hire car: pick up at Seville airport and compare prices on DiscoverCars. A one-way fee usually applies if you drop off in another city. See car hire in Seville.
  • In Seville: don’t drive into the historic centre, which has camera-controlled access and very little parking. See getting around Seville.

Connections: airport, beaches, Doñana and Portugal

  • Seville airport: there is no train from the airport to Huelva. Go by bus or train into the city and change, or pre-book a transfer from Seville airport, or pick up a hire car at the airport and be in Huelva in about an hour.
  • The Huelva coast: Mazagón, Matalascañas and Punta Umbría are reached from Huelva or Seville by car, or by local Damas buses on certain services (check before you go). See our Huelva guide and the Costa de la Luz.
  • Doñana and El Rocío: about an hour from Seville by car, and, in our view, best visited with a car or a guided tour. See the Huelva guide.
  • Faro and the Algarve: the A-49 continues west to the Portuguese border at Ayamonte. For the full journey, see Faro to Seville.

Both directions

Seville to Huelva is the same in reverse:

  • Bus: from Plaza de Armas to Huelva bus station, with Damas.
  • Train: from Sevilla Santa Justa to Huelva, a few a day. Taxi or the local buses to the station are described in getting around Seville.
  • Car: A-49 west, about 1 hour.

We think Huelva works as a day trip from Seville if you have a car: see day trips from Seville. Without a car, we’d book a guided tour.
