The short answer

The Setas de Sevilla (officially the Metropol Parasol) is a giant wooden canopy over Plaza de la Encarnación, opened in 2011 and designed by the German architect Jürgen Mayer. Locals call it “the mushrooms”. A walkway on the roof gives 360° views over the old town.

Buy tickets on the official website or at the ticket office on the lower level. Tickets are timed at busy hours, so book a sunset slot online.

What to see

  • The rooftop walkway. A wavy path across the top of the canopy with views of the cathedral, the Giralda and the church domes. Walk the whole loop for every angle.
  • The Antiquarium. In the basement, Roman houses and mosaics and Almohad remains found when the square was dug up for the project. Worth half an hour.
  • The market. The Mercado de la Encarnación, under the canopy, sells fresh produce in the morning and has a few bars.
  • The square itself. The shaded plaza is a meeting point for locals, with bars and street performers in the evening.

Tips

  • Sunset is the best time but the busiest. Arrive 30 minutes early.
  • In summer, avoid the middle of the day: the walkway gets very hot.
  • Nearby: the Alfalfa tapas area, the Palacio de la Condesa de Lebrija and the shops of Calle Cuna are all a few minutes away.

Yes, for the view and the architecture, especially at sunset. It is the best viewpoint in the centre after the Giralda.
