Parador de Granada (Alhambra). A 15th-century convent built inside the Alhambra on the site of a Nasrid palace, where Queen Isabella was first buried. Gardens, a terrace facing the Generalife, and the grounds almost to yourself in the evening. It has few rooms and is booked up months ahead.

Hotel Alhambra Palace (Antequeruela). A neo-Moorish palace from 1910 on the Alhambra hill, with tiled lounges and a terrace bar with one of the best views over Granada. Worth a drink even if you don’t stay.

Hospes Palacio de los Patos (Centro). A 19th-century palace with a grand staircase, joined to a modern wing, with a spa and a garden. Flat, central and close to the shopping streets.

AC Palacio de Santa Paula (Centro). A former convent on Gran Vía, with a cloister and Moorish-era houses built into the hotel. Central, calm and a short walk from the cathedral and Plaza Nueva.

Boutique and mid-range

Hotel Casa Morisca (Albaicín). A small hotel in a restored Moorish house around a courtyard, at the end of the Carrera del Darro. Some rooms look up to the Alhambra.

Hotel Carmen de la Alcubilla del Caracol (Realejo). A carmen on the slope of the Alhambra hill, with terraced gardens and views over the city. Quiet, with only a few rooms.

Hotel América (Alhambra). A small, family-run hotel inside the Alhambra grounds, next to the Parador, with simple rooms and a patio. The cheaper way to sleep inside the walls.

Hotel Casa 1800 Granada (Plaza Nueva and Darro). A restored old house with a patio, close to the Carrera del Darro, in a very central spot for walking both to the Alhambra and the Albaicín.

El Ladrón de Agua (Carrera del Darro). A boutique hotel in a 16th-century house on Granada’s most beautiful street, between Plaza Nueva and the Paseo de los Tristes.

Hotel Palacio de Santa Inés (Albaicín). A 16th-century house with a patio and painted walls, on a lane just above the Carrera del Darro. Character at a fair price.

Hotel Gar-Anat (Realejo). A small boutique hotel in a 17th-century house, in the local quarter below the Alhambra.

Hotel Palacio de los Navas (Realejo). A 16th-century house with a patio on Calle Navas, the tapas street, a few minutes from Plaza Nueva.

Room Mate Leo (Centro). Modern and cheerful, on a pedestrian street a few minutes from the cathedral. A good choice if you prefer a contemporary hotel.

Budget

Hotel Casa del Capitel Nazarí (Albaicín). A Renaissance house with a patio, steps from Plaza Nueva. Rooms are simple; the building and the location are the reason.

Hotel Macia Plaza (Plaza Nueva). Simple rooms on Plaza Nueva itself, with the Alhambra, the Darro and the tapas bars all within minutes.

Hotel Los Tilos (Centro). Good value on Plaza Bib-Rambla, next to the cathedral, with a roof terrace.

Hotel Guadalupe (Alhambra). A traditional hotel next to the Alhambra entrance. Handy for an early Nasrid Palaces slot, and easy to reach by car.

Booking tips

• Book the Alhambra before the hotel. Tickets sell out weeks ahead in spring and autumn, long before hotel rooms do. Get your date and Nasrid Palaces slot first, then book your nights around it. See Alhambra tickets.
• Match the hotel to your palace slot. For an early-morning slot, sleep on the Alhambra hill or near Plaza Nueva, and arrive the evening before. Don’t plan a morning slot on the day you arrive by train or car.
• Choose free cancellation, so you can move your nights if the Alhambra date changes, and check the price again a few weeks before your trip.
• A hotel on the hill doesn’t include a ticket. Even at the Parador, you need your own Alhambra ticket to visit the Nasrid Palaces.
• Think about luggage. Many Albaicín hotels are up stepped lanes that taxis can’t reach. Ask how close a car can get.
